Van Gaal: Van Persie’s celebration against Chelsea was stupid

by Sam Peoples

Louis van Gaal has labelled Robin van Persie’s goal celebration against Chelsea as ‘stupid’ and ‘not smart’.

After the Dutchman emerged from underneath a bundle of his Manchester United team-mates, he reeled off to celebrate in front of the Stretford End and took his shirt off in the process.

Phil Dowd stuck to the rule book and Van Persie was booked for his celebration, something which has frustrated Van Gaal.

“He did a stupid reaction after the goal,” he said.

“You can be excited but you don’t have to pull your shirt off because then you have a yellow card. It’s not smart.”

Van Gaal’s right in that it’s stupid to get a yellow card for a goal celebration and it’s certainly not smart but Van Persie was just caught up in the moment, he probably didn’t think about it before doing it. Thankfully, Van Persie wasn’t on a yellow card before scoring because he’d have been sent off.

Something which is great about Van Gaal’s reaction is that it highlights his attention to detail. He won’t let his United squad get too swept up in a result, win, lose, or draw, and will instead focus on where things can be improved. That sort of mentality will always make sure United continue moving forward and are never complacent.
