De Gea and Fellaini named in SPORT’s European Team of the Week

David de Gea and Marouane Fellaini have been named in the European Team of the Week by Spanish newspaper SPORT.

The Manchester United duo were central figures in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea for separate reasons.

While De Gea was at his imperious best between the sticks and kept Chelsea at bay apart from a pinpoint Didier Drogba header, Fellaini had his most impressive outing in a United shirt. Fellaini more than matched Chelsea’s midfield pairing of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic when very few fans had faith in him that he could put in that sort of performance.

On the day, Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois was named the official Man of the Match but the reality was that De Gea could easily have been awarded the accolade, so it’s no surprise to see a Spanish newspaper tip the hat in his direction.

As for Fellaini, it was a game akin to De Gea’s performance away to Real Madrid two years ago – a potential coming of age match. Going into the derby this weekend, the Belgian midfielder will be full of confidence.
