Kevin Strootman confirms to Roma he wants to join Manchester United – report

Kevin Strootman has told Roma that he wants permission to talk with Manchester United over a potential move in January according to reports.

The 24-year-old is close to making a return for Roma having been sidelined with a cruciate knee ligament injury from last season which ruled him out of the World Cup.

Although Roma have publicly and vociferously insisted Strootman is not for sale at any price and will not be leaving Roma in the imminent future, as is always the case in football, any player is available at the right price.

Louis van Gaal‘s relationship with Strootman would certainly be a persuasive factor in any move to Old Trafford for the Dutch midfielder. Following Strootman’s injury which ruled him out of the World Cup, Van Gaal adopted an entirely new 3-5-2 formation for Holland as he didn’t feel there was anybody in the Dutch squad who could replace him.

During the summer, United brought in two new central midfielders in Daley Blind and Ander Herrera but with Champions League football expected to be back at Old Trafford next season, there is certainly a need for at least one to improve the options within the squad.

Regardless of the truth behind these current reports of Strootman telling Roma he wants to join, there is every chance United will make a move for Strootman because of how highly Van Gaal regards him. Whether or not Roma sell remains to be seen but it all depends on how well Strootman plays after returning from his serious injury.
