Angel di Maria’s dip in form leaves Man United fans concerned

by Richard Laverty

Angel Di Maria’s recent performances in a Manchester United may be a cause of worry for supporters who have seen the club record signing decline in terms of impact during recent matches.

Since his home debut against QPR in September, Di Maria has been largely influential in the majority of games but has struggled more recently whilst playing on the wing.

After hitting the target against QPR, Leicester and Everton, Di Maria’s start to his Manchester United career couldn’t have gone much better. The whole team looked creative playing in a narrow diamond formation, allowing the 26-year old to drift out wide and get crosses in but largely influence the game from the middle of the park.

Louis van Gaal changed the formation to offer more defensive stability against West Brom and ever since Di Maria has failed to hit the heights of his first few games. Despite that, Di Maria played a large in role in goals against the Baggies, leaders Chelsea and Crystal Palace on Saturday and his overall importance to the team is still engraved in the minds of every reds supporter.

Paul Scholes claimed midweek that Di Maria wasn’t happy with life at Old Trafford, pointing to the fact the Argentine happily celebrated a goal by Cristiano Ronaldo towards the end of his final season with Real Madrid. It was an odd claim given that Di Maria’s celebration after Robin van Persie’s last minute equaliser against Chelsea became a popular video.

The winger sunk to his knees and celebrated wildly as United sneaked a point against the league leaders and has had no problem looking happy whilst celebrating his own goal at Old Trafford so far this season. His wife has also insisted he is very happy at United.

It’s far too early to read into Di Maria’s body language. He is still working hard for the team and contributing to goals on a regular basis and whilst he’s doing that, supporters will continue to enjoy watching their new hero.
