Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday night saw Louis van Gaal‘s men move back into the top four and steal a march on rivals such as the Gunners.
Given the poor form of most of the Premier League’s big players this season, Manchester United’s first away win in seven months was a timely one and puts them above Newcastle United, Swansea City and West Ham United. It will be somewhat of a comfort to supporters to see those three names below them with Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and co further back.
Given a difficult run of fixtures which has seen the reds come up against Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal in the past month, a return to the Champions League places will be welcomed from every one inside at Old Trafford, especially with back-to-back home games coming up against Hull City and Stoke City.
If Van Gaal’s men can take six points from those two fixtures, it should put them in a strong position but points wise and mentally when they go to Southampton and then host rivals Liverpool a week later, two games which could consolidate Manchester United as favourites for a spot in the top four come the end of the season.
Supporters can also take solace from the fact their side have moved ahead of their rivals with an injury crisis that refuses to die down. Rafael, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones all missed the win over Arsenal with Luke Shaw coming off early in the match. Falcao and Daley Blind were also missing from the victory and fans will hope the team can put a real run together when the injuries finally ease off.
