Manchester United hit the 40 mark for injuries when Luke Shaw limped off against Arsenal on Saturday.
Injuries have crippled United’s season so far with 23 first team players missing Premier League games at some point during the campaign.
Further injuries to defenders meant the club started the season in the formation Louis van Gaal anticipated, but not with the players the boss would have wished. Jesse Lingard lined up in the right wing-back role but even the youngster picked up an injury during the first half.
Teenager Tyler Blackett was drafted into the defence and new signing Ander Herrera was also withdrawn at half-time and wouldn’t appear again until September. The crisis was already taking hold and it didn’t help that there had been a lack of new signings, the first that had joined had already succumbed to the medical room.
Since the deadline day passed, fellow new signings Radamel Falcao, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo have all joined the absentee list with all having missed or due to miss large chunks of the campaign. Phil Jones, Jonny Evans have been out over a period of time along with Rafael whilst Luke Shaw now sits out with an ankle injury sustained at the weekend.
The crisis hasn’t yet reached the attacking part of the squad but United’s defence and midfield continues to be decimated by the issues and right now it seems there is no end to the crisis looming large over Old Trafford.
