A strong Manchester United side overcame Blackburn Rovers 5-0 in the quarter final of a Lancashire Senior Cup tie which saw two sides who have won the competition a combined 32 times (Blackburn 18; United 14) come face to face.
Ander Herrera, Anders Lindegaard, Jonny Evans and Adnan Januzaj were slotted into the U21s squad to get some minutes under their belt. Evans completed 64 minutes and Herrera came through the full 90 minutes.
It was a dominant first half from United. Will Keane gave United the lead in the 16th minute, finishing around the keeper after being picked out by Saidy Janko. That goal was Keane’s 9th goal in his last nine games and he has scored in each of his last five appearances.
Good defensive work from Janko and Tom Thorpe stopped certain goals. Herrera then doubled the lead. Adnan Januzaj found Herrera outside the box in a set piece straight from the training pitch. The Spaniard found the back of the net from just behind the penalty spot.
Josh Harrop was injured before half an hour went by and United were forced into an early substitution. The change however didn’t disrupt the flow of the game and with 5 minutes remaining in the half, Andreas Pereira beat the keeper with a deft shot.
Rothwell’s second was a lovely team goal with excellent build up, in particular from Andreas Pereira and Ben Pearson, before Rothwell curled it into the top corner.
That win puts United through to the semi-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup where they will face Wigan. However, it wasn’t all good news as captain Tom Thorpe was stretchered from the pitch with an ankle injury which meant that United had to finish the game with 10 men.
