Van Persie: I needed that goal against Hull

Robin van Persie says he ‘needed that goal’ after seeing his performances come under more scrutiny with every week that goes by of late.

Van Persie struck Manchester United’s third in a 3-0 win and seemed to channel his growing frustration into his shot which flew into the top corner in front of the Stretford End, leaving Allan McGregor with no chance.

Since scoring a last minute winner against Chelsea, Van Persie’s performances haven’t improved, culminating in a dire game for the Dutchman against his former team Arsenal last week where he managed just 12 touches of the ball all game.

With rumours of a place in the starting line-up for James Wilson in midweek, Van Persie tried to make the most of Wilson’s untimely injury with a great goal.

Speaking after the match, Van Persie said: “I was glad to score – I needed that goal to be honest. We played really well, you could see that in way we passed the ball.

Every week it gets quicker and better. Today it could have been 4-0 or 5-0.”

Wilson’s injury was timely for van Persie and allowed him a temporary reprieve and despite a poor first half performance where things seemed to be going from bad to worse for the striker, some part of his manager’s open criticism was in his fierce strike that rounded off United’s performance and sealed the three points.

With Wilson’s injury prognosis unknown, van Persie will probably keep his place in the team on Tuesday with Radamel Falcao still returning to full fitness.
