David de Gea was the stand-out performer in a dreadful season last year for Manchester United and was rewarded with a call-up to the Spain squad for the World Cup after injury ruled out Victor Valdes.
This season, De Gea has pushed himself to become an even better goalkeeper and his performances so far have made him a leading contender to be named United’s Player of the Year for a second in succession.
Behind a shaky defence, De Gea has been as solid as a rock and United would certainly not be in fourth place were it not for his heroics so far this year.
Speaking to ManUtd.com, Ander Herrera has heaped praised on his compatriot.
“He has been fantastic and is one of the best players in the world at 24 years old,” Herrera said.
“He wants to help the team get to the top of the league, like me, like everyone. We feel he can become one of the best if not the best goalkeeper in the world.”
It’s astonishing to think De Gea is just 24. Rarely are goalkeepers so young first choice at a big club like United but De Gea belongs there. Edwin van der Sar played at United until he was 40, so De Gea has so much time ahead of him and will only continue to get better.
Already, he has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and it won’t be long before he is Spain’s No.1, so the sooner United can agree a new contract with him the better.
