Juan Mata‘s goal proved to be the difference for Manchester United in a 2-1 victory over Stoke City which ended with a nervous 15 minutes of pressure from the away side.
The Spaniard was named Man of the Match for his performance and it is the second game in succession where he has played an influential role in United’s win.
After the game, Mata took to Twitter to express his delight at the win:
It was an important win for United to make sure that momentum was taken into the game against Southampton on Monday and Mata was happy to have taken all three points.
“It was very tough and we were, until the last minute, suffering,” Mata told MUTV.
“They (Stoke) played good in their way. They came here as a very compact team and they play good counter-attacks with Bojan and quick players up front – we knew that.
“I think we played better in the second half; we kept more of the possession and created more chances. At the end, it’s a very important win, a fourth win in a row and we are getting closer.”

United’s injury problems have made it difficult for United to gain momentum but they have finally found it now and Mata is buoyed by the performances despite all the injury woes.
He added: “The spirit is there. We have not been lucky with injuries. We’ve had important players that could not play but the spirit is there. Everyone was very happy in the dressing room after the game because it was a difficult game and we showed character.
“It was very important to win at Arsenal, and then to get two wins in a row at home. Now we have the chance to have a great December – probably the most important month in the league because we play more (games than in any other month).”
