Van Gaal: I want to win the FA Cup

Manchester United manager Louis an Gaal has stated he will be taking the FA Cup seriously and wants to win the competition.

Off the back of United’s fourth league win in a row, the FA Cup 3rd round draw is looming large on the horizon once this weekend’s 2nd round matches are complete.

United haven’t won the FA Cup since 2004 when they beat Millwall 3-0 despite playing in two finals since that triumph which is now over a decade ago.

Despite this being his first experience of one of football’s most historic tournaments, van Gaal is under no illusions regarding the importance of the competition.

“I know what the FA Cup means to this club, our players and our fans. Its place in the history of Manchester United is well known,” said van Gaal.

“So it is hard to believe that long-serving players such as Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Jonny Evans have never won this cup. It is a medal I know they are desperate to get their hands on.”

Van Gaal will have on eye on a top four finish now that he finally has his United side in their best form of the season but there’s no hint that the boss would put out a weakened line-up similar to the one humiliated by MK Dons back in August.

Despite the harrowing defeat, van Gaal doesn’t appear bothered about who the draw throws up for him.

“In draws such as this I am often asked which teams I would like to avoid or would like to come up against. My only real wish is that we get to play the match at Old Trafford in front of a home crowd.”
