Di Maria ruled out of Southampton but quick return expected

Angel Di Maria will miss Monday night’s match against Southampton according to Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal but he will be back ‘very quickly’ as the injury is not too serious.

Di Maria pulled up early on with a hamstring injury on Saturday against Hull City and missed the Stoke City game on Tuesday night as a result.

There was a little hope that the new United star would be able to return for the important trip to Southampton but van Gaal today confirmed that Di Maria would indeed miss the game.

“It’s not a bad injury, but I am not a doctor,” Van Gaal said this afternoon.

“I have to say it like a manager, not like a doctor. But I think he shall recover very quickly.”

It’s a big blow to United given the Argentine’s form since joining the club but Ander Herrera slotted nicely into the midfield in both games and should continue to prove an able replacement for the former Real Madrid man.

Di Maria scored on his Old Trafford debut against QPR and continued his good form for several games until moved out wide in a return to the 4-2-3-1 system more familiar to United supporters in the last few years.

But an ever-increasing injury list saw van Gaal return to his tried and tested 3-5-2 at the Emirates and Di Maria was instantly more influential playing through the middle behind Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.

With a big game against Liverpool looming on the horizon, United will hope their star man can return for one of the biggest match-ups of the season.
