Jonny Evans struggles on Man Utd return after injury

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans finally returned to first team action against Southampton on Monday night after missing three months of the season through injury.

Evans picked up the injury against Leicester City in September and returned to action for the U21s in recent weeks but was thrown into the fray at St. Mary’s after an injury to Chris Smalling early on.

The Northern Ireland international looked shaky early on and appeared to be replicating his performances from earlier in the season, where United supporters will remember him gifting MK Dons an early goal all too well.

He put his team mates in danger on a regular basis and despite improving in the second half, United supporters weren’t happy whilst others were more forgiving in what was his first game in three months after all.

The return of Evans is at least a boost in numbers given the injury picked up by Smalling but the severity is yet unknown.

Phil Jones and Rafael should be returning to first team action within the next few weeks so Evans’ return is welcomed and if he can re-find some form it’ll be most helpful for the boss.
