Player Ratings: Southampton 1-2 Man United – Van Persie king of St. Mary’s

by Richard Laverty

David De Gea 8 Had more to do than in recent matches and once again did it with ease. Nothing as spectacular as Stoke but kept United in with a chance of winning as usual.

Patrick McNair 3 Looked a shadow of the previously assured defender, made a few errors and was subbed off for Ander Herrera in the first half.

Chris Smalling N/A Picked up an injury early on, a big blow given his form since returning from suspension.

Marcos Rojo 5 Not one of Rojo’s finest games, like others looked thoroughly uncomfortable in a back three and lost possession in dangerous areas.

Antonio Valencia 5 Very rarely entered key parts of the game, defended as well as he could without offering any attacking threat.

Michael Carrick 6 Started off in midfield but moved back into defence when Smalling was injured and McNair subbed. Did his best but couldn’t control the game as he usually would.

Marouane Fellaini 4 Definitely his worst performance of the season. Fellaini said he felt tired after a run of games and it showed tonight. Sloppy passes and all round poor performance but defended where needed at the death.

Ashley Young 6 One of the better performers on the evening. Crosses lacked conviction but seemed to take well to the wing-back formation once again. He can be relatively happy with his 90 minutes.

Juan Mata 3 You wouldn’t have known he was playing until his number came up on the 87th minute. Mata just couldn’t influence the game as United rarely had the ball in an attacking position, he’ll come back better.

Wayne Rooney 5 Missing a game seems to have knocked the captain back a peg or two. Tried hard as always but grew frustrated towards the end. Showed his usual energy but he’ll have much better games.

Robin van Persie 8 Back to his best tonight. Hold up play was exceptional, turned defenders and won several aerial duels. Topped it off with two goals from United’s only two shots on goal. Good to have him back.

Substitutes

Jonny Evans 4 Can give Evans the benefit of the doubt given he shouldn’t have played for so long tonight after three months out but he regularly put United in danger. Calmed down in the second half but need better from someone with his experience.

Ander Herrera 5 Not Herrera’s best game. Came on for McNair but like Juan Mata he struggled to influence the game. One neat interchange Rooney showed his potential but didn’t live up to recent billings.

Darren Fletcher N/A Becoming customary to see Fletcher enter the fray with minutes to spare, another brief showing from the vice-captain.
