Sporting Lisbon manager says William Carvalho could move to England

Sporting Lisbon manager Marco Silva has admitted William Carvalho has many offers from English clubs and could move to the Premier League.

Manchester United were considered frontrunners for the 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder after David Moyes sent scouts to watch him on more than a dozen occasions for Sporting last season.

The interest in Carvalho died down after Moyes’ dismissal but with Louis van Gaal in the market for another midfielder, Silva’s comments make it clear the midfielder could leave Sporting sooner rather than later.

“William is a target for English teams, but I want him to play his game,” he said.

“He’s not playing at the same level as last season because last season he was a surprise, but he’s improving.

“William has many offers. Let’s wait until January.”

Previously, Carvalho has revealed his desire to join a Premier League club and although his €45m release clause more than likely put United off, he is not the talk of the town any more so his price would have dropped somewhat.

Carvalho was one of the best players in Portugal last season at just 22 would come in as a youngster to United’s squad but his powerful frame has earned him comparisons with Yaya Toure.

United fans who are interested in seeing how good Carvalho is can watch him in action tonight against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League.
