Valencia: Rooney and Januzaj are Man Utd’s fastest players

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia doesn’t believe he is the fastest player in the squad, but the identity of one player he named might surprise you.

Valencia has regularly been seen bursting up the right touchline during his five years at Old Trafford but with the winger approaching his 30th birthday, it seems at least part of the younger generation have taken over the fastest player honours.

Whilst doing a fan Q+A session on the club’s official website, Valencia was asked by a fan if he is the fastest player in the squad but being ever the modest, the winger credited his team mates with the honour.

He said: “I’m not sure. Wayne Rooney is quick, as is Adnan Januzaj – I think it’s between them…”

Rooney may come as a surprise to some given his age and the fact he has clearly lost the initial speed which made him so terrifying for defences when he first arrived at Old Trafford as a teenager a decade ago.

But anyone who saw Rooney charging back to try and deny Jamie Vardy a fourth goal at Leicester in September will have realised the striker’s raw speed is still there and very much a key part of both his and United’s game.

Januzaj won’t come as a revelation to anyone given his age but United fans rarely see such pace from the tricky winger. The Belgian appears to drift past players using his technique and change of direction rather than raw pace during matches.
