Jones has been sidelined for nearly the last two months with shin splints he suffered during a training ground injury in the week leading up to the Chelsea game but could be fit enough to feature against Aston Villa on 20 December.
Jonny Evans made his return to first-team action having replaced Chris Smalling who suffered a groin tear against Southampton, so United’s defensive injury tombola has continued in Jones’ absence.
However, having Jones back and available for selection will give Louis van Gaal a much needed defensive boost ahead of the end of the festive period where United play so many games in such a short amount of time.
For United fans, there is a certain degree of caution about getting excited Jones is set to return because like Smalling and Evans, he has a poor injury record and seemingly spends more time on the injury table than the football pitch.
It’s been much of the same this season for Jones but the hope now is that he’ll be able to fully overcome this injury and look to make a good impression for the rest of the season.
