Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria will miss Sunday afternoon’s crunch match with rivals Liverpool according to manager Louis van Gaal.
Di Maria picked up a hamstring injury two weeks ago early on in the match against Hull City and there was hope the Argentine would return this weekend but van Gaal has ruled him out of the match.
It’s a blow for United given Di Maria had looked much livelier back in his central position against Arsenal the week before and had looked a threat playing further up the field in the early stages against Hull.
But despite Di Maria’s continued absence, United have won both their games since the former Real Madrid man picked up his injury and will be confident of a sixth win on the bounce with or without their star man.
United fans can take some heart from the fact it doesn’t sound like Di Maria’s injury will keep him out for too much longer. The side have six days to prepare for the next match against Aston Villa before four games in ten days over the Christmas period will put the whole squad’s fitness to the test.
Di Maria’s continued absence may mean the 3-5-2 recently brought back by van Gaal in recent weeks may stay against Liverpool despite the team looking shaky and uncertain at the back.
