Louis van Gaal is delighted to see Robin van Persie back to his best and feels his performance against Southampton was his most impressive individual display of the season.
Van Persie scored two fantastic goals with very accomplished finishes which helped United win 2-1 but it was more than just the goals which the Dutch striker impressed with.
His all-round play was back. Off the ball he made space and his hold-up play was excellent, so he’ll go into the game against Liverpool in top form, something which will please Van Gaal.
“This was his best game of the season,” Van Gaal said.
“Van Persie was a hold-up striker and as sharp as a finisher. And he had also finally that bit of luck on his side.”
After the very public criticism of his form from Van Gaal, the press and fans, it was great to see Van Persie respond emphatically with a performance like that against Southampton.
What the Dutchman now has to do is carry that form into the Liverpool game this weekend because if he can score a winner against the scousers, he’ll be more than forgiven for his slow start to the season.
