Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal pours praise on David De Gea

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was quick to praise his goalkeeper, David De Gea after the Spaniard put in another world class performance against Liverpool on Sunday.

Van Gaal has been reluctant to go over the top on the praise for De Gea in recent weeks but said the no.1’s ‘fantastic reactions’ were the reason behind his side keeping a clean sheet.

The 24-year-old made several relatively routine saves in the first half but his first from Raheem Sterling was the catalyst for Wayne Rooney to open the scoring less than a minute later.

His most impressive save was reserved for half-time substitute Mario Balotelli. The Italian thought he’d scored but De Gea tipped his shot on to the bar to make sure he walked away with another clean sheet.

“I’m proud we have a clean sheet but that is also because David De Gea has superb reactions,” Van Gaal said after the game to BBC Sport.

It was a performance that United supporters have grown used to, especially this season. Against both Everton and Stoke City De Gea made superb saves in stoppage time whilst keeping his team mates in the game during the recent visits to both Arsenal and Southampton.

The goalkeeper’s contract currently runs out in 2016 and supporters will be worried about the lack of action regarding the situation. But van Gaal says he is not worried at the moment.

“That is between the club and the player. That is not for discussion with the media,” added the manager.
