Gareth Bale would walk straight into Man United’s starting XI

Amid speculation that Manchester United are looking to make an audacious bid for Gareth Bale, do United really need him?

After a summer where the Glazers broke the bank for new signings, United are ready to start adopting a Galacticos approach to their transfer policy. In short, if you want someone, buy them. There was a strong argument in the summer that Angel di Maria, the club’s record signing, was not a necessity for United but given the quality the Argentine brings to the club he just had to be bought.

There is no doubting Bale’s talent. He took the world by storm when he was at Tottenham before moving onto greater things at Real Madrid. He was key to the side that won La Decima last season and really started to prove his worth. At 25, he should soon be coming to his peak. Would he fit in at United? Absolutely.

A club that has built itself on speed and width, United could find no better fit. The ethos of the club has always allowed for exciting, attractive footballers and it is evident that this is trying to be brought through with the signing of Di Maria.

Bale is a player that a club simply cant refuse. He has proven in the Premier League from his time at Spurs and United could be the place where he finally fulfils his entire potential.

The downside? He would cost over €100 million. The Glazers seem prepared to break the bank again next summer in order to bring the good times back to Old Trafford but would signing Bale neglect other important parts of the team? A solid, experienced central defender is surely a must as well as another midfielder. Mats Hummels and Kevin Strootman are two names that are being thrown around and they together could cost the club close to what Bale would.

At the end of the day, individuals can’t define the team. Bale would be a brilliant asset to add to United but if his acquisition means other signings cant be made, then he just might not be worth it. Louis van Gaal has often spoken about ensuring his team is balanced and that should show that a necessary player is much more important than yet another superstar.
