De Gea robbed of clean sheet against Newcastle after solid performance

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea failed to keep another Old Trafford clean sheet when Papiss Cisse tucked away his penalty into the corner with just five minutes to go.

Manchester United were 3-0 up and cruising and de Gea has Phil Jones to thank for giving away the penalty. United supporters have come to expect solid performances from de Gea now and today was no different.

The Spaniard made one great save in the first half from Daryl Janmaat but did what he had to do once again and is becoming the biggest calming influence among the defence.

Gone are the issues of claiming crosses or poor clearances, de Gea now appears to be the all-round package and seemed delighted with another three points after the game.

After a string of performances which saw him talked about as one of the world’s best, it seems odd to see the Spanish international so unflustered and untested during a match.

But besides his first half save from Janmaat, de Gea had little to do but even he could do nothing about Cisse’s perfect penalty.

United go to Spurs and Stoke next and the anticipation is that the 24-year-old will be tested more in the next few days than he was on Boxing Day.
