Manchester United extended their unbeaten run to eight games following a 3-1 victory at home to Newcastle but had to do it without Angel Di Maria
Di Maria was expected to return to the line-up after a substitute appearance last week but was left out of the squad altogether.
Louis van Gaal confirmed before the game the United star had picked up an injury in training and explained after the match that it was a pelvic injury but claimed it was ‘not heavy’, giving supporters hope the Argentine won’t be missing for long.
Despite not putting a definitive timescale on the injury, Di Maria will be lucky to return for United’s next match which takes place in less than 48 hours when they visit Spurs on Sunday.
“In the last training session, he [Di Maria] stepped out of the warming up,” Van Gaal said.
“It was a little bit amazing because he did everything very well, but he stepped out and now we have to wait and see for the analysis.”
Despite the initial positive prognosis, supporters will be disappointed they didn’t see Di Maria in a game that was perfect for his return. Newcastle’s midfield and defence provided little battle but it will be all the more frustrating given the midfielder had only just overcome a hamstring injury.
With three games coming up in the space of a week, there will be hope inside Old Trafford that their record signing will be able to play some part of the busy festive period.
