Van Gaal: Fellaini will miss Spurs game

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini won’t play on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur thanks to an ongoing problem with an illness.

Fellaini missed last weekend’s game against Aston Villa through illness and supporters expected to see the big Belgian return against Newcastle on Saturday.

However, a virus going around several members of the squad has kept Fellaini for longer than anticipated and Van Gaal confirmed he won’t make the Spurs game.

It’s a blow for Van Gaal given that Ander Herrera and Daley Blind are still missing but with Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney doing well against Newcastle, United can cope in Fellaini’s absence.

Speaking after the win over Newcastle, Van Gaal said: “Also Fellaini is out, I think it is the Belgium virus! Will he be ready for Spurs? No he is ill. Fellaini and Adnan [Januzaj] are not ready.”

Fellaini had been in good form for the reds this season ever since coming on as a substitute against West Brom back in October.

Two and a half minutes into his return, the midfielder smashed home his first goal for the club and went on a run where he started every game for United until illness hit him last week before the Aston Villa match.

Van Gaal appears to have found a place for him in his team and his return next week hopefully will be a big boost to the squad.
