Robin van Persie has been seen sharpening his volleying technique in recent games and whenever the Manchester United striker lines one up, flashbacks to his goal against Aston Villa in 2013 remain.
The Dutchman tried an even more ambitious effort against the same side last week on his right foot and pulled out of a chance on his stronger left foot against Newcastle on Boxing Day.
But van Persie did pull off one of his efforts during the team’s warm-up for the Newcastle match on Friday, lashing the ball past David de Gea and caught on film by a fan behind the goal.
The strike shows a different side to van Persie than earlier on in the season. As lately as November, van Persie was coming under criticism from the media, his supporters and even his own manager and would have been dropped had James Wilson not been taken ill before the Hull City game.
Van Persie responded in the best possible way, scoring a beauty against Hull before scoring both goals which saw United defeat Southampton at St. Mary’s.
Further goals against Liverpool and Newcastle yesterday confirmed van Persie’s return to top form and supporters will hope that continues against Spurs on Sunday.
