Jones: Falcao and Van Persie were terrific

Phil Jones has hailed the performances of Manchester United strike duo Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao against Tottenham Hotspur as ‘terrific’.

Despite drawing a blank and wasting several chances between them, Jones had nothing but praise for the pair for how they linked up and brought others into play.

The strikers have formed quite an alliance this season, linking up against Leicester before once again combining for the opener against West Ham.

On Boxing Day, the duo could be seen crossing over one another to leave space for Wayne Rooney to run in and score the first goal against Newcastle and Jones reserved his praise solely for the two strikers.

Speaking to the Manchester United website, Jones said: “We created numerous chances in the first half and perhaps should have been three or four nil up at half-time, but it wasn’t to be.”

“In the second half they came out and pushed us to the end. We knew that would happen, but we stayed resilient and we kept a clean sheet.

“It’s always nice to come away with a clean sheet but ultimately the lads are disappointed not to have taken all three points. I thought Falcao and Robin were terrific today. They held the ball up well, they linked up well but it just wasn’t our day in front of goal.”

With Rooney expected to continue his midfield duties in the absences of Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind, the two could link up once again as United open up 2015 against Stoke City on Thursday.
