Van Gaal explains substitutions against Tottenham

Louis van Gaal has explained why he brought on three defenders as Manchester United chased a winner against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Rafael Da Silva, Chris Smalling and the returning Luke Shaw all came on at various points during the match whilst striker James Wilson was left on the bench.

It looked almost certain the young striker would be involved given the tiredness shown late in the game but he had to make do with a seat on the bench for 90 minutes.

But van Gaal says he made the substitutions due to tiredness and injuries, not to be negative.

Antonio Valencia was replaced at half-time due to an issue with his thigh whilst Jonny Evans was brought off for Chris Smalling. Evans has played in three consecutive matches after three months out so tiredness was to be expected on his behalf.

Luke Shaw‘s return was most welcome for supporters given his form before picking up an injury against Arsenal and he replaced Patrick McNair late on after a difficult afternoon for the young defender.
