Both players have been missing for a few weeks through illness and injury respectively but ahead of United’s game against Stoke City on New Years Day, it’s good news to hear they are working their way back to full fitness.
“Herrera trained today for the first time with us but, yes, they don’t have match rhythm,” he said at this afternoon’s press conference.
“Januzaj has also trained two training sessions with us, but he was ill and you have to recover from your illness, not from your tiredness. Maybe it’s worse to recover from illness.”
Out of the two players, Herrera is the one United need back sooner rather than later because there isn’t another midfielder in the squad who is similar to him. Wayne Rooney dropping into a deeper role has replaced some of the creativity but Herrera’s all-round game has been missed.
As for Januzaj, it’s been a frustrating season far for the 19-year-old thanks to injuries, form and being kept out of the side by others, so he will be keen to get more game time in 2015 under Louis van Gaal.
