Louis van Gaal‘s decision to take Radamel Falcao off against Stoke City left Manchester United fans confused and the Colombian looked equally as bemused.
When Falcao realised it was his number on the fourth officials board, he looked around at his team-mates pointing to himself looking for clarification before he jogged off.
Falcao’s face on the bench was indicative of that – confused.
Louis van Gaal was not asked about his decision to take Falcao off and leave Van Persie on when questioned in his post-match press conference but the general consensus is that it is more than likely to do with his fitness. After all, the Colombian had started three games in a week having not done so in a long time. That being said, Falcao didn’t look like he felt ready to come off.
As it turned out, Falcao’s substitution marked a shift in the game as United lost their grip and Stoke began to exert all the pressure. His withdrawal marked the end of United’s attacking threat and by the full-time whistle, a draw was a fair result.
