Transfers which Man Utd could complete in January

by Sam Peoples

With the January transfer window open, what deals could Manchester United complete in the next month?

Anderson has played no part in United’s season so far under Louis van Gaal. The Brazilian midfielder would have been sold in the summer if United found a buyer and the situation remains the same for January. He has no future at the club so it is a matter of when and not if he is sold.

The situation isn’t quite as clear cut for Tom Cleverley but the general consensus is that he is also going to be leaving United sooner rather than later. Reports suggest Aston Villa could make his loan deal permanent in January and that’s something which would more than likely suit United.

One player who could go the other way is Ron Vlaar. The Villa defender’s contract runs out in the summer so his fee would be small and Van Gaal knows how to get the best out of him. He’d be an experienced head which Van Gaal is desperate to have in his side but he might be considered too much of a short-term signing.

All eyes will be on Kevin Strootman and whether United make a move for him in January. The Dutch midfielder has returned to fitness and AS Roma’s exit from the UEFA Champions League has fuelled rumours of a potential move to United.

With Strootman, it all depends on whether Van Gaal would be willing to wait until the summer to make a move for him because as he still hasn’t completely recovered from his knee injury, there is a risk he may never be the same player again.

Another player who could exit United is Anders Lindegaard. The goalkeeper was looking for a new club last summer but although nothing materialised, the Dane will still want to move in order to gain regular first-team football again.

Nick Powell is reportedly having his Leicester City loan spell terminated. If that’s the case, United will want to get him back out on loan to another club as soon as possible. Bolton Wanderers have already been linked.
