Manchester United’s second match saw them face VfB Stuttgart. Both sides had lost their opening matches, United losing 3 – 2 to Grasshopper Club Zurich and Stuttgart losing 1-0 to Schalke 04.
Much like the game against Grasshopper Club Zurich Devonte Redmond saw an effort hit the post. Ro-Shaun Williams was on hand to make a goal-line clearance, after poor defending from United, to keep the scorelines level.
Oliver Rathbone, who has adapted well to this style of football, scored what proved to be the winning goal against Stuttgart in the first half.
Rashford had a good chance to double the lead when he managed to turn and shoot but unfortunately his effort went just wide of the goal. After that it was a case of defending by numbers from United. At many times goals were prevented by sheer volume of bodies blocking the path to the goal.
United held out for a 1 – 0 win which saw them leapfrog Grasshopper Club Zurich into second place in Group B. However United’s third and final group game will be against Schalke 04 who are topping Group B, and placing in the initial group stage will have a bearing on the teams to be faced in the second stage of the tournament.
