Kevin Mendez set to join Roma

Penarol youngster Kevin Mendes is set to complete his transfer to Serie A side AS Roma.

The 18-year-old striker has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United over the last few weeks but is going to be sealing a ‘dream’ move to Italy.

“I am very happy to be playing in Italy,” Mendez said.

“I’m not sure where yet, as I could stay at Roma or be loaned to Perugia.”

He also commented on the transfer to Radio Uruguay earlier today.

“What I know is that Roma bought 90 per cent of my contract and we are working out the final details. A loan to Perugia is a possibility and I think the most likely option right now.

“At this moment I feel conflicting emotions. On the one hand, I am sad to be leaving my country and the club I’ve always supported. On the other, this represents a big leap forward for my career. I will play in Europe, in one of the most important Leagues in the world.

“It is a dream for me to play in Italy. I had some Italian lessons, but I didn’t have much time between training and matches. I’m sure I will settle in quickly. My father is coming with me and will be my support at the start, at least.”

United had previously dealt with Penarol having signed Guillermo Varela from the Uruguayan club but Mendez is not set to join him in Manchester.

Mendez is one of a host of talented youngsters who United are constantly linked with and he almost certainly won’t be the last one.
