Man Utd vs Southampton: Potential 4-4-2 diamond – Di Maria starts

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United completed the festive fixture period with a gritty 2-0 win over Yeovil Town yesterday to extend their unbeaten run to 11 games.

Next up for Louis van Gaal‘s side is Southampton at Old Trafford on Sunday just a few weeks after United’s 2-1 win over the South coast side at St. Mary’s Stadium.

Going into the game, United have their traditional injury woes but Angel di Maria’s cameo against Yeovil was superb and he could make his return to the starting XI on Sunday.

Injuries to Luke Shaw and Rafael, to add to Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia, mean United are without any fit wing-backs so there is every chance of switching back to a 4-4-2 diamond. That would certainly get the best out of Di Maria too.

The question with this formation is how you fit every player in because United have so many world class options in attack that somebody has to miss out.

In this example, Ander Herrera is the player who misses out at the expense of Juan Mata who plays in the no.10 role with Wayne Rooney in his deeper central midfield position.
