Garcia: Strootman is Roma’s biggest signing in January

Manchester United continue to face a battle to sign AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman after the Italian club once again reiterated their desire to keep hold of the midfielder.

Strootman has been heavily linked with the club ever since his former boss took over from David Moyes but United had to wait for the Dutchman to recover from a serious knee injury.

With Roma out of the Champions League, reports suggested that could help United’s chances of signing the player in January but Roma are continuing their tough stance.

When asked by reporters who his own transfer targets might be in the next few weeks, manager Rudi Garcia offered this response: “The biggest signing of January? Iturbe and Strootman.

“With Kevin, we obviously knew he had such a bad injury that it would take him time to get back to 100 percent. He’ll basically only have half a season, but fortunately we play less games in the first half of the campaign.

“The more he trains, the more he is improving. For Kevin, the break was important, even in a mental sense to get back to training with a freshness. Gradually, we’ll see whether he is 100 percent, but he is getting back to it in training.”

Whilst people close to both the club and the player believe it is a matter of time before Strootman pulls on the red shirt at Old Trafford, the latest quotes out of Italy will not read well with supporters.
