Ashley Young facing spell on sidelines

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United winger Ashley Young could be out for over a month after suffering a hamstring injury against Stoke City in December according to the latest reports.

Young had been in great form for United playing in the wing back role with Luke Shaw out injured and his injury is a blow but Shaw’s return has softened the impact somewhat.

Despite Shaw picking up a knock against Yeovil, he should be available to face his former club this weekend and if not, Daley Blind‘s return offers further cover.

Even so, should Louis van Gaal continue using the wing back system, Young’s absence will be a blow given he appeared to thrive in the system more than anyone.

Young was in the middle of a breakaway up the field against Stoke as United chased a late winner but it appears the England international succumbed to a muscle injury as many did over the busy Christmas period.

Due to injuries, Young had started every game in a short period of time in a position that demands plenty of running and it’s no surprise the winger finally picked up a bad injury.

Young is expected to return sometime in early February so van Gaal will hope Shaw can put a consistent run of games together without injury.
