Predicting what formation Manchester United are going to use is hard because of how often Louis van Gaal is changing between a 5-3-2 and 4-4-2 diamond this season.
A recent penchant for the 5-3-2 suggests that is Van Gaal’s current preference, which is surprising when you consider United are playing five at the back when fit defenders are a rare commodity at the club.
However, the potential return of Daley Blind could make it possible as it would free Michael Carrick to drop back into defence, or vice versa. Marcos Rojo coming back would also give United a much better selection in defence.
The main difficulty lies in the wing backs with Valencia, Young and most likely Rafael out of the Southampton game. Shaw has been passed fit but there is no guarantee he will start.
Up front, it is much of the same. There has been some good stability there for United, if only they could have that in defence.
