Victor Valdes has been speaking to MUTV after completing his protracted move to Manchester United on Thursday evening.
After months of speculation and training sessions at Carrington, Valdes finally put pen to paper on an 18-month contract which will see him provide experienced back-up to David de Gea.
Speaking immediately after the move, Valdes said it was great to be at the club: “For me it is a pleasure to sign for Man United,” said the former Barcelona goalkeeper.
“It has been a hard recovery time from my injury and the first thing I want to say is thank you to Louis van Gaal for letting me work again with him and his team. This change is very important for me because my injury was very, very hard. United and everybody around United saved me and they looked after me, so I am very grateful for everybody around the world and for the manager for giving me the chance to be a United player.”
After spending most of his career enjoying unprecedented success at Barcelona in Spain, Valdes not only provides experience but plenty of talent go to with it. With Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos expected to leave the club, Valdes may be given his opportunity to shine against Cambridge in a few weeks.
Louis van Gaal says Valdes will play the number two role to de Gea but the 32-year-old is looking forward to working with his fellow Spaniard.
“I think now, in the moment, he is the best goalkeeper in the world. His performance every day and in every game shows everybody that his level is very high. He has had a great year and it is very nice. Now I think he is the best goalkeeper in the world.”
Valdes left Barcelona in sorry fashion after suffering a serious knee injury towards the end of last season. Originally linking up with van Gaal in order to get fit, the goalkeeper says he is now fully fit and ready to be called upon.
“I am very, very satisfied with my recovery and very happy to be on the pitch like a player again. That is most important for my brain and most important for my family. It is very, very nice for me.”
