Man United linked with interest in Karim Benzema

by Richard Laverty

Reports in France this week suggest Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is chasing Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

The French star recently extended his contract in Madrid to 2019 but could fall foul to the constant recruitment process president Florentino Perez relies upon at the club.

Perez got rid of two key members of last season’s Champions League squad, Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso, in order to sign James Rodriguez off the back of the World Cup whilst Toni Kroos had arrived pre-tournament.

With rumours already starting over Gareth Bale’s departure to accommodate Marco Reus, Le 10 Sport suggest Benzema could make way as Madrid prepare a bid for Sergio Aguero after losing out on Luis Suarez to bitter rivals Barcelona.

Benzema has been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool in recent months but it was no secret that Sir Alex Ferguson actively tried to bring the highly-rated Benzema to Old Trafford when he left Lyon for Madrid.

With doubts over the future of Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie reaching the end of his career and Wayne Rooney seemingly set for a run in midfield, Benzema could make sense and if United are already in discussions with Madrid over Bale, Benzema’s name may have crept into the equation.

The two clubs have dealt with each other plenty in recent years with David Beckham, Gabriel Heinze and Ruud van Nistelrooy all making the move to Madrid from Manchester. Cristiano Ronaldo also made the move in 2009 whilst United brought Angel Di Maria to Manchester in the summer with Javier Hernandez soon moving the other way.
