QPR vs Man Utd: Potential 4-4-2 diamond – Rojo returns, Di Maria in no.10 role

by Sam Peoples

After the performance against Southampton, Manchester United fans have grown rather tired of the 5-3-2 formation which Louis van Gaal has used so often this season.

With that in mind, we’ve gone for a 4-4-2 diamond formation for our first line-up against QPR next weekend.

The first thing to notice about this line-up is the return of Marcos Rojo in defence. Van Gaal said Rojo’s position was ‘fixed’ in his starting XI when fit and with another week’s training under his belt, the Argentinian defender could come back into the team alongside Michael Carrick, allowing Daley Blind to play further forward.

With Marouane Fellaini brought back in to add physicality in midfield, Di Maria has been given Juan Mata‘s no.10 role. He struggled up front against Southampton but there is too much competition for places in central midfield to play him there, so the no.10 spot could be given to him.

The 4-4-2 diamond has seen United play some wonderful football this season at points and with the right players available, it is arguably United’s best formation.
