Robin van Persie was taken off with ankle injury against Southampton and Manchester United face an anxious wait for the results of his scans on Monday.
Having been substituted, the Dutchman walked straight down the tunnel after being instructed to by United’s physio and looked uncomfortable while walking on his ankle.
It wasn’t the best of performances from Van Persie who never got out of first gear just like the majority of United’s players on the day but it will be a blow if he has suffered an ankle injury.
Luke Shaw and Angel di Maria were both substituted as well by Louis van Gaal but speaking after the game, he confirmed neither substitution was due to injury: “Shaw was not injured but he needs match rhythm,” he explained.
“Also Di Maria, he is not injured but he needs match rhythm. That is why I had to change.
“Of course, we have players who are coming back but then we also need match rhythm. It is not so simple to play in the Premier League, so I have to adapt to the circumstances.”
