Fan reaction: Should Darren Fletcher be sold?

by Richard Laverty

Darren Fletcher could be on his way out of Old Trafford this month as West Brom have made an enquiry to Man United about the availability of the Scottish midfielder.

Fletcher missed over a season’s worth of action with a serious bowel condition called ulcerative colitis and despite his popularity among fans and the spirit he showed in his return, his form has suffered hugely.

At one time, Fletcher’s attitude and willingness in midfield made him key to United’s playing style when options were limited under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Supporters united in grief when Fletcher was ruled out of the 2009 Champions League final, such was his importance to the side but now fans believe it is time for him to bow out.

Fletcher has struggled when called upon this season despite being given the vice-captaincy at the start of the campaign. Michael Carrick has now taken on that role and it is unlikely Fletcher will start too many more games given his poor performance against Aston Villa before Christmas.

Whether or not his departure comes this month, Fletcher’s contract expires in June and it seems unlikely that Van Gaal will offer him a new one when you take sentiment out of the equation.
