The 30-year-old midfielder was named vice-captain at Man United by Louis van Gaal after an excellent pre-season tour of USA but has since fallen out of favour after the arrival of Daley Blind and the return of Michael Carrick from injury.
Fletcher is not the player he once was before and although it will be a terrible shame to see one of United’s own leave the club after spending 20 years in Manchester, it would be the right decision when you put sentiment to one side.
This is the first time Valencia has been linked with Fletcher and it comes at a time when reports from Spain say they have rejected a €35m for Nicolas Otamendi.
Any move for Fletcher could potentially grease the wheels for an Otamendi move to be put into motion. Something which could also help is that Jorge Mendes is Otamendi’s agent and Louis van Gaal has already dealt with him over Radamel Falcao this year.
Also, Valencia chairman Peter Lim is an investor in Salford City which could make him more inclined to discuss a potential transfer with the club, although it almost certainly wouldn’t affect his price.
There are just under two weeks left in the January transfer window and Man United still have plenty of time to bolster their options ahead of the crucial run-in this season in what is likely to be a close fought race for the top four positions.
