Man United latest team news – Smalling and Evans ruled out, Van Persie and Shaw back, Valdes could make debut

by Richard Laverty

Here is the latest Manchester United team-news ahead of Friday’s game away to Cambridge United in the FA Cup.

Chris Smalling was on the bench against QPR but Louis van Gaal confirmed he has an injury that will keep him out of the match against Cambridge.

Jonny Evans came off against QPR with a knock and will also miss the game alongside his defensive colleague, leaving Man United with fewer defensive options than anticipated.

Ashley Young has not yet recovered from a hamstring injury and will also sit out the match on Friday.

Luke Shaw was a mysterious absentee last weekend but is fit to return against Cambridge. The 19-year-old should come straight back into the starting XI with Young out injured.

Robin van Persie missed the QPR match with an ankle injury but will return along with Shaw, as confirmed by Van Gaal.

Rumours in the press this week suggested Victor Valdes would start but Van Gaal wouldn’t confirm so to MUTV. It will be interesting to see how he gets on should he feature.

Adnan Januzaj surprisingly didn’t feature at all against Yeovil and no minutes on Friday would surely confirm a loan deal is on the cards.

Ander Herrera hasn’t started a league game since November but scored a beauty in the FA Cup Third Round. Needs a game on Friday.
