Victor Valdes waiting in the wings for Man United debut

Lots of Manchester United fans expected to see Victor Valdes in goal against Cambridge at the weekend but Louis van Gaal decided against giving him his debut.

With seven of Cambridge’s outfield standing over 6ft tall, there was logic to the decision as Valdes hadn’t played a game of competitive football since March last year. Plus, conditions were far from ideal.

In hindsight, Cambridge rarely threatened Man United’s goal apart from a few dangerous set-pieces but it does beg the question – when will we see Valdes in action?

With David de Gea in such incredible form this season, there’s no chance Van Gaal will give Valdes his debut in the Premier League (unless De Gea was to suffer an injury), so the FA Cup is where he’s most likely to get an opportunity.

The upcoming replay against Cambridge at Old Trafford will be a far more suitable game for Valdes to start in comparison to the away game. In front of a home crowd on a better pitch in more favourable conditions, it’s as good a game as ever for Valdes to start.

If Valdes doesn’t start against Cambridge, you’d have to wonder when he would be given his debut this season if Van Gaal doesn’t use him in a game at Old Trafford against League Two opposition.
