Darren Fletcher set to join West Ham on free transfer – report

Darren Fletcher is set to join West Ham on a free transfer having been granted permission by Manchester United, reports The Telegraph.

The 30-year-old had been in talks with multiple clubs but it looks like Sam Allardyce’s West Ham have won the race to sign the Scottish midfielder this January.

Fletcher’s contract expires in the summer and although Man United could receive upwards of £1m for selling Fletcher, letting him leave on a free transfer would allow him to secure a more lucrative wage deal. It would be a nice touch to do that for a man who has dedicated his entire career to Man United.

Although nothing is at this stage confirmed, a deal for Fletcher is expected to go through in the final week of the January transfer window.

For Fletcher’s career, a move away from Man United is the right decision as it will give him the regular first-team football he needs which he simply wouldn’t get under Louis van Gaal.

It will be sad to see a player who has dedicated his entire career to Man United leave the club but sentiment aside, he isn’t cut out to play in midfield for United any more.
