Ryan Johnson joins Man Utd on trial

Manchester United have taken teenage Stevenage defender Ryan Johnson on trial to get a closer to look at their youngest ever player.

The 18-year-old has made the break through into Stevenage’s team this season, making three appearances and has caught the eye of United who have decided to see what he can do first-hand at the AON Training Complex.

Johnson started his career at Premier League side West Brom but eventually left the club at the start of last season for Stevenage in order to progress his career.

Despite only being on a scholarship deal, Graham Westley and his coaches were so impressed with the defender they gave him his debut in May and signed him to professional terms a year early.

Two further appearances this season has ensured Johnson has come to the attention of clubs such as United and he will spend a week showing the coaches at the club what he is capable of.

Louis van Gaal has constantly shown a commitment to youth this season, giving the likes of Tyler Blackett, Patrick McNair and Tom Thorpe their debuts.

Other youngsters from abroad have also been linked with deals to join the club and despite the expectation Van Gaal will only stay at Old Trafford for three years, he appears to be setting the foundations for United’s future.
