Thorpe impresses on Man Utd U21s return

Manchester United U21s captain made an impressive comeback after shaking up a recent injury in United’s 2-1 win against rival Liverpool U21s.

Earlier expectation suggested Thorpe could have been out for longer but the 22-year-old centre=back proved to be a welcome addition to the side which included several first-team players including Brazilian midfielder Anderson and defender duo Patrick McNair and Tyler Blackett.

Contrary to Louis van Gaal‘s notion of post-injury players needing to time to find their “match rhythm”, Thorpe fitted in seamlessly into the line-up and looked impressive throughout the match. It was the kind of performance one would expect from a first-team player playing amongst U21s , not the other way round. Thorpe showed his exceptional ability of reading the game and making important challenge as well as his usual calmness on the ball.

Many fans were raving about his performance after the game, with some even suggesting that Van Gaal has made a big mistake by preferring McNair and Blackett ahead of him.

For the moment, let’s just hope United has a plan for Thorpe’s development, even though it might not be with this football club. The centre-back might look at how his U21s partner Michael Keane has developed his game away from the club to consider his future.

Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Saidy Janko and Patrick McNair are other players that made positive impression during the game in front of a few representatives from Premier League and Championship clubs including Hull and Wigan, both of whom have been linked to a loan offer for ex-Crewe midfielder Nick Powell.
