Man Utd’s transfer deadline day round-up: Goodbye Fletcher, hello Kellett

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United had a manic transfer deadline day in the summer but January’s was far more reserved in comparison and it wasn’t just at United as overall, January was quiet for most teams.

There were no big defensive signings which some Man United fans felt were important in order to help with the top four push this season. Instead, there were multiple loan deals including a surprise signing and the exit of a much loved United favourite.

Darren Fletcher joined West Brom on a free transfer and called time on his Man United playing career. Fans will be sad to see him go but all parties involved knew it was the right time for him to make the move and we all wish him the very best.

Wilfried Zaha completed his return to Crystal Palace having failed to make an impact at Man United. Some fans were surprised to see him leave so soon but he’ll now go down onto a pile of disappointing transfers which boasts exalted company like Bebe and Eric Djemba Djemba.

The only signing of deadline day saw Bolton Wanderers’ Andy Kellett join on loan with Saidy Janko going in the opposite direction. It’s good for Janko to go out on loan but the signing of Kellett is a very strange one indeed.

Marnick Vermijl joined Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent deal. The Belgian defender’s exit from Man United was inevitable given that he failed to break through into the first-team

Also, Jesse Lingard signed a new three-and-a-half year deal and joined Derby County on loan, a move which will enable him to fully recover from his injury and regain his match fitness.

All in all, it was an underwhelming transfer window from Man United but not overly surprising. Van Gaal has taken the risk in sticking with his defenders until the summer, whether that comes back to haunt him remains to be seen.
