Player Ratings: Man United 3-0 Cambridge – McNair stars

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea 7 Incredibly hard to rate someone who had nothing to do all night, but what he did have to do he did with ease. Could have put the kettle on.

Patrick McNair 9 What a pleasant surprise. Was excellent at right-back and played a big part in the opening goal, could have had a couple himself on another day. Top performance.

Chris Smalling 7 Easy night for Smalling and his defensive partners, one sloppy ball in the second half aside it was an expected, solid performance.

Jonny Evans 7 Same as Smalling, neither had much to do but you can’t rate people down for that! Was comfortable throughout.

Marcos Rojo 8 Another great performance. Got stuck in as usual and grabbed his first goal for the club as a reward. With each game he is endearing himself to his new fans.

Daley Blind 7 Another game where the Dutchman controlled things. One early mishap gifted Cambridge a chance but was back to his usual, silky best after that.

Wayne Rooney 7 Practically played right wing, then left back, then striker, then wherever he wanted. Controlled the game and unlucky not to score. Better from the captain.

Angel Di Maria 7 Looked at ease against tired legs. Some good crosses caused problems, as did his pace and he had a big role in the opener. Good to see him looking lively again.

Juan Mata 7 Like Di Maria, he was at ease against the opposition. Opened the scoring and played a few delightful balls to open up the visitors. Will have tougher tests though.

Robin van Persie 6 Can’t knock his effort but nothing stuck for him tonight, missed from all of two yards out and was constantly thwarted by the goalkeeper and the defenders. Played well but not his night.

Marouane Fellaini 7 Oddly played up front but had the impact van Gaal wanted. Nodded down for Mata to open the scoring before playing a role in the second. Caused the chaos intended.

James Wilson 7 Good game for the striker to come into as Cambridge tired. Took his goal beautifully and it is another string to the striker’s bow.

Ander Herrera 6 Game was killed by the time he arrived, some neat touches and did what was asked of him. Set up Wilson’s goal.

Ashley Young N/A A welcome return after a month out but had little chance to make an impact, just came on to get some minutes under his belt.
