Carrick ahead of schedule in return from injury

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed Michael Carrick is ahead of schedule in his return from injury.

Carrick is currently Man United’s only injured player and it was thought he would be sidelined for four weeks with a muscle rupture.

Van Gaal admitted the Englishman is ruled out of the West Ham game on Sunday but he may be back fit sooner than expected.

Speaking about the injury, Van Gaal said: ”Carrick is doing well and will return very fast. Better than we expect but we have to wait and see.”

The midfielder had already missed the majority of Man United’s season after undergoing surgery on his ankle before the campaign started, so his latest injury was another unfortunate setback in what has been a stop-start campaign. His return to the United line-up coincided with the team’s best period of form in the season and his absence came as a blow.

To have the midfielder back quickly would be a luxury for United, who have had to deal with a seemingly endless amount of injuries this season.

Ashley Young made his return from injury for the club with a brief cameo in the FA Cup win over Cambridge United, Rafael recently played the full 90 minutes for the U21s and Luke Shaw also revealed he isn’t injured despite reports to the contrary.
